Chemical/Water Analysis

Confidential Client

How DOE solved fluoride interference problems in aluminum water analysis.

The Challenge

Fluoride interfered with standard method for analyzing aluminum in water and wastewater. Magnitude of effect unknown.

The Solution

Used I-Optimal design with aluminum levels 0-0.5 mg/L and fluoride levels 0-1.75 mg/L. Measured aluminum concentration by Eriochrome Cyanine R technique.

The Results

Showed strong interaction between aluminum and fluoride more important than fluoride presence alone. Allowed correction for interference. Accurate aluminum concentration now possible.

"Experimenters learned how to correct an Aluminum analysis for fluoride interference."
