Manufacturing/Precision Instruments

Accelerometer Manufacturer

How engineers used DOE in one weekend to restart production and ship 60 units on time.

The Challenge

Pivotal welds were cracking. Production line down. All accelerometer shipments stopped. 60 accelerometers needed to ship on time.

The Solution

Used YAG laser welding. Designed Experiment varied laser power, rpm, revolutions and two different lenses. Measured weld depth for each trial.

The Results

In one weekend (7 hours), discovered optimal YAG laser settings to maximize weld depth. Parts with maximum weld depth did not crack. Production line restarted. 60 units shipped on time.

"In one weekend, engineers used Design of Experiments to figure out why pivotal welds were cracking. The production line was no longer down, and 60 accelerometers were shipped on time."
